people look at mitt romney and say i think actually he would be better fixing the economy as a whole. but then when you ask them who understands you, who understands what's going on in your life, they say president obama. i think that obviously there is some conflict there. but closer to home you get, i think as a candidate the better your chance. now i can also tell you that the romney campaign is looking at its own numbers, all the numbers we see and they still see a clear path, they say, to victory. as do both sides. it's one of those things where, as we all know, it comes down to who has the biggest -- who has the best turnout model in which states. and that's just something that's not really knowable until tuesday evening. >> it always comes down to that, right? the poll that really matters is the poll that happens on tuesday evening. candy, thank you. >>> let's get to ali velshi. i have to warn you, i may be cutting you off in two seconds. we're waiting to -- ali, wait a minute. >> we've got the number right now. it's 7.9%. >> 171,000 jobs created. 171,000 jobs decrcreated. 7.9%

people understand the economy is improving. but the real debate is whether it is fast enough and whether mitt romney could have done a better job. in toledo, ohio, today, one of the battle ground counties of ohio, the must win buckeye state, i spoke to mayor bell, he put it out that january 2009, unemployment here was 12.6% in this county. today it is around 7.5, lower than the national average. that is a measurable improvement. that doesn't mean the economy is going on all cylinders right now. but there is measurable improvement, and that becomes -- for big debate, romney saying he could have proved things faster, president obama saying don't return us to policies that got us here in the first place. >> but, ali, when you look at the unemployment rate in ohio now is 7%, below the national average, will people give -- will voters give that credit to john kasich, the republican governor here or does that go to the president? >> that's a good question. yeah. that's exactly the question. in a number of these swing states where the

if you're a romney supporter, you're going to focus on the unemployment rate being 7.9% versus 7.8%. in the state of ohio there are a lot of things going on economically including shale gas, hydraulic fracturing or fracking as we call it. here in toledo there's a slow bubbling resurgence of the city that's right behind me, very slow. the jeep plant, i just spoke to a man here and it's resonating around here that mitt romney attack where he says president obama, sure, he may have bailed out the auto companies but did it to create jobs in china and suggesting that jeep is going to build vehicles in china, i've heard people say things like disgusting offensive. so that didn't play out all as well in some of these auto places like this in youngstown. bottom line, ohio like some of the big swing states has an unemployment rate lower than the national average. look at virginia and ohio. the question is who do you credit for that? a republican governor or a democratic president? and that's the big question here. but it's probably a wash as to what the unemployment rate did for president oba
